Are you looking to add height and an evergreen conifer look to your garden, but you don't have the space for a 60 foot tree? Blue Arrow Red Cedar is well suited to add a vertical element to much smaller spaces. The blue-green evergreen foliage adds year round interest and a lovely contrast to other evergreen conifers or deciduous trees and shrubs. Red Cedar is also perfect for gardeners needing to plant near the seaside. This shrub is tolerant of salt air and windy conditions.

Blue Arrow Red Cedar is a deer resistant plant that requires very little maintenance. It is drought resistant after establishment and will perform well in a wide range of hardiness zones, from 3 -8. The Native variety of this cedar grows to great heights and is used for its rot resistant and aromatic lumber. Blue Arrow also produces berries that feed birds throughout the fall and winter.

Blue Arrow Red Cedar Care

Red Cedar cultivars prefer a full sun situation, but will tolerate shade either in the morning or afternoon. An acid pH helps to keep Blue arrow’s color blue and healthy. Very few diseases plague this Red Cedar. A well drained soil is important to keep root rot type diseases away.

Blue Arrow Red Cedar has a naturally dense upright growth habit that does not require pruning. They also look great grouped together to make an informal hedge or a windbreak. A mulch of organic compost or leaves will help these shrubs to tolerate drought conditions or hotter than normal summers.

Blue Arrow Red Cedar Spacing

Blue Arrow has a height of 12-15 feet and a narrow width of 2-3 feet. When planting together as a hedge a spacing of 3 feet on center is recommended. Planted as a specimen, this shrub can be underplanted with herbaceous perennials or other conifer evergreens.
