Growing Zones
Blue Buccaneers Hybrid Bee Delphinium may be one of the bluest and tallest delphiniums available. The flower spikes can grow up to 5 feet! The intense cobalt blue color of the individual flowers will look good in just about any garden and is less prone to fading. The numerous flower stems are less prone to sagging and bloom early in the summer and then again later before the blaze of fall colors.
Blue Buccaneers is one of the New Millenium™ lines of delphiniums. These hybrids are grown to have sturdy stems, dense foliage, and the most flowers packed on tall spikes. The foliage is a lovely textural contrast to other summer perennials even while this delphinium is not in bloom. Pair delphiniums in the garden with hardy geraniums, hydrangea, or Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass.
Blue Buccaneers Hybrid Bee Delphinium Care
Plant delphiniums in a full sun to part shade location that has well-draining and moist soil. Delphiniums appreciate shaded roots and benefit significantly from shallow-rooted ground covers planted near them. Water delphiniums regularly, but allow the top 2-3 inches of soil to dry between sessions. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses help keep the foliage dry, resulting in less chance of pests and diseases attacking. Fertilizing is essential for these hungry and hard-working plants. Apply a balanced, granular fertilizer early in the spring and then again once a month, ending in July.
Staking for delphiniums is very important. Place sturdy bamboo canes or metal poles close to the flower spikes and tie them in to ensure they do not flop over or break when heavily loaded with blooms. Deadhead the first flush of blooms to encourage another bloom cycle late in the summer. In the fall, cut all the top growth back to within 6 inches of the soil and mulch the crown and root zone with 4-5 inches of organic compost or finely shredded arborist chips. In the spring, brush the mulch off the crown as the new growth emerges.
Blue Buccaneers Hybrid Bee Delphinium Spacing
Blue Buccaneers is a larger-sized delphinium with a height of 3-5 feet and a spread of 18-24 inches. Space multiple plants 18 inches apart, center on center. They require good air circulation to prevent diseases and pests from attacking the foliage.
