Award-winning Agastache ‘Blue Fortune’ is a long-blooming summer perennial. This Anise Hyssop has a delicious licorice fragrance and gorgeous, lavender-blue bottlebrush flowers that appear from July - September. It is a vigorous grower and blooms on strong, upright stems.
Blue Fortune Anise is an easy-to-care-for, low-maintenance, and rewarding perennial. It has an upright habit, growing 3-4 ft tall with a 2-4 ft spread at a medium growth rate. Hardy in zones 5 - 9. When you crush its foliage, it has a distinctive, pleasant aroma of licorice. The sage-green, fragrant leaves can be used in teas or potpourri. Often referred to as Hummingbird Mint, this deer- and rabbit-resistant perennial attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. The dried seed heads can be left on for added visual interest and self-seeding if desired.
Blue Fortune Anise Care
This hyssop thrives in full sun, planted in well-drained soil, but it's not too fussy about its watering needs. It will tolerate drier soils once the plant is established. Avoid planting hyssop in heavy clay or poorly draining soils because this can lead to crown rot. Blue Fortune can be planted in larger containers, which will allow for its large spread.
You can remove dried spent blooms or leave them on the plant for additional interest. You can cut off and sprinkle the dried seed heads around the base of the plant in the fall for a fuller plant the following year. Cut back the faded foliage close to the ground after the 1st freeze.
Blue Fortune Anise Spacing
Use this North American native as a medium-to-tall border plant, in a cut-flower bed, or grouped in a mass planting. It has an extended bloom time of up to 4 weeks and looks amazing in cottage, eclectic, and butterfly/pollinator gardens.
