Blue Glitter Sea Holly, Eryngium planum 'Blue Glitter', is a visually striking tough-as-nails perennial native to coastal regions of Europe and North America. The unique, spiky, intensely colored, silvery-blue leaves have distinctive thistle-like flowers that stand above the basal rosette of blue-green, deeply toothed leaves. As the name suggests, when sunlight hits Blue Glitter Sea Holly just right, they shimmer and glow an electric blue color rarely seen in the landscape.
Blue Glitter Sea Holly is tolerant of sandy and gravelly soils and salt spray, making them ideal for coastal and water-wise gardens. They grow in Hardiness Zones 5-8, reaching 3 ft tall with a spread of 1-2 ft. wide. This distinctive perennial delivers form, texture, and electric blue color in an easy-care package, and is equally striking used in floral arrangements.
Blue Glitter Sea Holly Care
Blue Glitter Sea Holly loves the sun, so plant it in a sunbaked area that gets at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Avoid planting in rich soils, as Sea Holly prefers lean, sandy, or gravelly soils; all soils should be well draining as soggy soils can lead to root rot. Blue Glitter Sea Holly has a narrow hardiness growing range, so if extreme cold temperatures are expected, apply a few inches of organic mulch around the base of the plant to help protect the roots.
Blue Glitter Sea Holly doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. Deadheading the thistle-like flowers will encourage new blooms. Trim back any foliage that has been damaged to improve the overall appearance and health of the plant. Cut the spent foliage a few inches from the ground in early spring to make room for new fresh growth.
Blue Glitter Sea Holly Spacing
When planting Blue Glitter Sea Holly, space plants at least 18 inches or more from each other in order to allow plenty of sunlight and air circulation between each plant.
