Blue Guardian Delphinium (Delphinium elatum ‘Guardian Blue’), also called Candle Larkspur, grows to majestic heights and sports stunning, richly colored, dark-blue florets with white center ‘bees’. Blue Guardian is a hardy perennial, growing in zones 4 - 7. Deep-blue blossoms make a lovely cut flower for floral arrangements or provide a tall, colorful display in your landscape.
This delphinium blooms from late May through early July; they put on a big show in early summer, and then give a second colorful show later in the summer. Bees love this plant; it also attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and other important pollinators. Reaching heights from 30 - 40 inches and up to 36 inches wide, this perennial is lovely used in the midground of a cottage or English-style garden. As a bonus, it is also deer and rabbit resistant.
Blue Guardian Larkspur Care
Plant Blue Guardian Larkspur in full to partial sun in moist, nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. Select a spot in your garden that provides a bit of shelter to protect them from strong winds and harsh rains. Plant delphiniums so the crown rests slightly above the soil line to avoid crown rot.
Remove spent flower spikes to promote another flush of blooms in late summer. Blue Guardian is toxic to pets, so keep these blue beauties in an area your pets won’t roam.
Blue Guardian Larkspur Spacing
Blue Guardian Larkspur can spread up to 3 feet when happy, so give them plenty of room to grow. Plant them in mixed beds, cottage gardens, cut-flower beds, and pollinator gardens. Blue Guardian is fantastic as a cut flower in large floral arrangements; they also create a maximum color impact when planted in mass groupings.
