Support pollinators and enjoy lovely flowers with Blue Heaven Butterfly Bush. Tiny violet-blue flowers with a slight orange eye grow in clusters. The cone-shaped flower clusters gently arch and continuously bloom from spring through the first heavy frost. Also known as Buddleia x 'Podaras #8’, this butterfly bush boasts silvery-green foliage with serrated edges and a fuzzy texture.

The mounded, spreading form makes the Blue Heaven Butterfly Bush a good pick for beds and borders. Plant this bush in the back of a mixed bed for height and color, or create a low hedge along a fence or shed. Bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies enjoy the flowers, but the plant is generally deer resistant. Grow the Blue Heaven Butterfly Bush in zones 5 through 10.

Blue Heaven Butterfly Bush Care

Plenty of sunlight is necessary for the Blue Heaven Butterfly Bush to thrive, so choose a planting location in full sun. Rich, moist soil that allows drainage is vital. New plants need regular water, but established plants can live in drier conditions. Water during an extended dry period to support growth. A springtime fertilizer application gives the Blue Heaven Butterfly Bush a solid start to the growing season.

Prune the plant in early spring to remove dead and damaged growth. Leave spent growth in place over the winter to protect the crown.

Blue Heaven Butterfly Bush Spacing

The Blue Heaven Butterfly Bush grows 24 to 30 inches tall and wide. Space plants 24 to 30 inches apart for a dense planting.

?

"Blooms on" tells you which stems produce flowers, which decides when it's safe to prune.

  • New Wood: Flowers form on stems that grow this season. Prune in late winter or early spring without losing blooms.
  • Old Wood: Flower buds form on last year's stems. Prune right after flowering. Pruning in fall or early spring removes next year's blooms.
  • Both New and Old Wood: Blooms on last year's stems and again on new growth, so it flowers even after a hard winter or a mistimed pruning. Prune lightly after the first flush of blooms.
