Growing Zones
Sea Holly is an underused herbaceous perennial that gives drama to anywhere it is planted. The spiky thistle-like flowers really make a statement. Blue Hobbit is a shorter variety that is ideal for container growing or placing at the front of a hot, dry garden bed. Blue Hobbit is absolutely covered in steely blue flowers from June until August. The flowers look great in many settings, but have a very modern, strongly architectural feel that works planted as a specimen in containers.
The spiny leaves and flowers make Sea Holly very tolerant of salt and wind in coastal gardens. It also works well in full sun rock gardens or at the front of more modern plantings of ornamental grasses and Shasta Daisy. Butterflies and native bees really like the thistle flowers, while deer and rabbits absolutely hate the texture.
Blue Hobbit Sea Holly Care
Sea Holly is just about the easiest plant to care for. Give it full sun, well drained soil and winter mulch and that is really all it needs to provide masses of flowers that are long lasting in the garden or vase. Fertilizing is almost never needed. If color and blooms seem to be declining, a feed of a slow release fertilizer as new shoots emerge will give this plant a nice boost.
Mulching of Sea Holly is recommended in the lower hardiness zones. This can be with leaves, shredded branches or other organic material. Using compost may be too rich and will encourage more leave production than blooms. The best mulch are the plant's leaves and bloom stems as they die back in the fall. Easily removed in the spring as the new growth emerges.
Blue Hobbit Sea Holly Spacing
Blue Hobbit Sea Holly has a nice compact height of 10-12 inches and width of 8-10 inches. When planting many together, they should be spaced at 12 inches on center. This allows the leaves to fully spread and maintain good air circulation all of the way around the plant.
