Growing Zones
Enjoy year-round color with Blue Lyme Grass or Leymus arenarius 'Blue Dune’. Narrow foliage is a silvery blue that coordinates well with companion plants with purple or blue flowers. Blue Lyme Grass is cold and heat tolerant, so it will look stunning all year, but it is particularly good at adding color to a winter landscape. Flower plumes emerge in late summer and add some extra texture.
Blue Lyme Grass adds unique color and texture to a space and works well as a ground cover. Include this grass near the back of a mixed bed, or use it along a walkway or to frame a mailbox. Plant it on an embankment to prevent soil erosion and trim the foliage to feature in flower arrangements. Deer and rabbits leave the foliage alone, so Blue Lyme Grass is a good pick if you have struggled with foraging animals visiting your yard. This ornamental grass is also salt resistant.
Blue Lyme Grass Care
This ornamental grass is adaptable, but expect the best results when planted in full sun and fertile, moist, well-drained soil. New plants need consistent water, but established plants often only need water during a dry period.
Cut foliage back in late spring to encourage more vigorous new growth. Divide the clumps as needed in mid-spring or early fall.
Blue Lyme Grass Spacing
Blue Lyme Grass is a large ornamental grass that stands 2 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. This clump-forming plant quickly spreads, so space plants at least 2 to 3 feet apart, and cull wandering rhizomes as needed.
