Blue Mist Dwarf Fothergilla, botanically known as Fothergilla gardenii ‘Blue Mist’, is a compact, highly ornamental, deciduous shrub that delivers a big impact. It features colorful blue-green foliage and white, honey-scented spring flowers. In the fall, expect amazing fall colors similar to larger Fothergilla varieties, while this compact variety keeps things neat without sacrificing any of the head-turning show!
Blue Mist Dwarf Fothergilla is hardy in zones 5-8 and develops a balanced 2-3 ft height and spread. The honey-scented, bottle-brush spring flowers delight the senses as well as attract plenty of beneficial pollinators. Blue Mist Dwarf Fothergilla puts on a spectacular display in autumn with gold, orange, apricot, and crimson-burgundy colored foliage. This compact shrub is lovely when planted in groups as a low, colorful hedge.
Blue Mist Dwarf Fothergilla Care
Blue Mist Dwarf Fothergilla shrubs prefer full sun to dappled shade locations; however they produce a better flowering and foliage display when planted in full-sun locations. Plant this shrub in well-draining, slightly acidic soil that has been amended with garden compost or well-rotted manure. Blue Mist Dwarf Fothergilla will become more drought tolerant once fully established.
This low-maintenance shrub is generally pest- and disease-free. Provide a layer of mulch around the base of the plant about 2-3 inches thick to help protect the roots from extremely cold temperatures. If you live in a cold climate with icy winds, additional winter protection such as wrapping the shrubs with burlap may be necessary to prevent windburn.
Blue Mist Dwarf Fothergilla Spacing
Add visual interest by planting Blue Mist Dwarf Fothergilla as a single specimen, in a low-growing hedge, along walkways for fragrant spring edging, as a foundation planting, or in any mixed border where the colorful foliage will accentuate your landscape. Space each plant 24 inches apart on center to allow for the mature spread of 2-3 feet.
