This unique phlox carries more of a fluttery characteristic than most phlox with its larger than usual blooms. The Blue Moon Woodland Phlox’s flowers emerge in shades of purple and violet, creating a carpet-like appearance over the bright green foliage. Blooming in late April, this perennial phlox is a welcoming addition to any landscape for earlier in the season, bright color. This tall phlox can be grown along a border, or can thrive within a container as well.
This native perennial is hardy in zones four through eight. In Contrast to the creeping variety, this fragrant phlox grows upright, and tall. This phlox may look fragile, but it is tough and stands up to the elements of April in cold climates while providing an early season source of pollen and nectar for bees and hummingbirds. While it adds a nice pop of color mid-spring to landscapes, the long stems of this phlox would be of great use in a cut flower garden, for bouquets.
Blue Moon Woodland Phlox Care
The Blue Moon Woodland Phlox does well in full to partially shaded areas. It also thrives in moist, well drained soil. If there’s a spring drought, it should be watered to be kept healthy and able to bloom. It shouldn’t need to be fertilized, as most of its energy is spent blooming in late Spring, but a layer of mulch in the spring could be beneficial.
This plant can be trimmed back to make room within the landscape or container once blooming is finished, in mid-summer. This plant will continue to bloom well into May.
Blue Moon Woodland Phlox Spacing
This perennial works wonderfully in both landscapes and containers, as it grows tall at ten to twelve inches high. It should be planted 12 to 15 inches away from other phlox plants, as it will emerge larger each year.
