The Blue Prince Holly is a handsome evergreen that will introduce year-round color and texture to a landscape. Dark bluish-green foliage has a leathery texture and grows on purple stems. The leaves of the Ilex X meserveae have sharply serrated edges for a classic holly look. White flowers are very low-key. The Blue Prince Holly is a male plant that will not develop berries but can pollinate any female meserveae holly.

This is an upright, multi-branched plant with a dense structure. The Blue Prince Holly makes a beautiful hedge, border, or privacy screen, especially since the foliage stays in place all year. This shrub is easy to maintain and does well with very little care. Blue Prince Holly grows as a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 8.

Blue Prince Holly Care

This shrub needs 4 to 6 hours of sunlight. Neutral to acidic soil that is rich and moist but well-drained is best. Give the plant one inch of water per week or water when the top few inches of soil are dry. 

Routinely feed the plant using balanced fertilizer during the spring. A layer of organic mulch can also help support new growth. Shape this shrub as needed in the spring and remove suckers as necessary.

This broadleaf evergreen will reach 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 7 feet wide. Plants can be spaced 4 to 6 feet apart when creating a dense border or privacy screen.
