Blue Whiskers Blue Fescue, Festuca glauca, is a taller and tougher variety of blue fescue ornamental grass than standard fescues. Standing in a rounded form, this fescue reaches about a foot tall and 2 feet wide. Its silvery blue blades of grass are bluer than traditional fescue. In summer, yellow-green flowers appear above the leaves and fade to tan by fall. The blue blades are evergreen, making Blue Whiskers a pretty year-round companion plant for tall shrubs or an evergreen low border.
Blue fescue is a salt-tolerant plant and typically resistant to deer. This makes Blue Whiskers Blue Fescue a versatile border plant that can thrive along sidewalks and driveways. It grows well in full or part sun, adding to its versatility. Try a few Blue Whiskers plants as container fillers around or before a larger flowering plant. The grass is cold hardy to zone 4 and tolerates heat in zone 8 summers.
Blue Whiskers Blue Fescue Grass Care
Blue Whiskers Blue Fescue can grow in poor or average soil, but needs good drainage. In spring, you only need to trim it back to shape and remove any dead leaf blades. Blue fescue is a neutral grass that never goes dormant. If the clump browns in the center, you can divide and replant clumps of Blue Whiskers every few years. Be sure to divide it only in spring. The grass needs less than average water, but cannot handle long periods of drought.
Blue Whiskers Blue Fescue Grass Spacing
For a pretty evergreen groundcover or short border, place several Blue Whiskers Blue Fescue together. Space the grass clumps just over 2 feet apart from center to center.
