Perhaps one of the most attractive large hostas, the Blueberry Muffin Hosta produces beautifully textured blue leaves that you just want to touch. As a large cultivar, Blueberry Muffin can grow to around 3 feet wide and forms a dense mound of rounded blue foliage. If that was not enough, lavender-blue flowers appear in early summer. As a reliable and impressive blue hosta, Blueberry Muffin is ideal for adding some texture and color to a shaded area in your garden.
Widely used as a low-maintenance landscaping plant, hostas are perfect for those tricky shady situations. With its sumptuous leaves and stunning color, the Blueberry Muffin Hosta is ideal for growing in an herbaceous border or for growing in a large container. Due to its spreading form, it can also be used for ground cover or to underplant larger shrubs and trees.
Blueberry Muffin Hosta Care
Hostas are shade-loving perennials and like to be grown in either part or full shade with protection from the afternoon sun. The Blueberry Muffin Hosta thrives in acidic to neutral soil that is fertile, moist and free draining. A sheltered spot out of the way of the prevailing wind is advisable to help prevent this plant from drying out. Since hostas prefer moist soil, regular watering is required, especially when grown in a container. To encourage lush new growth, you can apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in spring as the leaves appear.
To prevent slugs and snails from overwintering in the foliage, you can cut your hosta back to 1 to 2 inches after the first frost arrives. You can also remove the spent flowers and any tatty-looking leaves to keep its appearance tidy. Pot-grown specimens can be placed in an unheated greenhouse or on a porch over winter to provide some protection from the worst of the weather.
Blueberry Muffin Hosta Spacing
When mature, the Blueberry Muffin Hosta can reach a height of 14 inches and a spread of 36 inches. When growing this hosta as part of a group, a spacing of 3 feet between plants is recommended.
