The Blueberry Pie™ Butterfly Bush is a compact shrub that will be right at home in a butterfly garden. The dainty, tubular flowers have scalloped petals in a dark purplish-blue hue. Each bloom has a white ring near the center, surrounding an orange eye. The flowers bloom in 5-7 inch cone-shaped clusters and make a stunning visual impact. The fragrant flowers bloom from late spring until fall.
The flowers certainly make a statement, but the blooms are complemented by dark green leaves that come to a pronounced point and feature serrated edges. The mounded form is dense and covered with flowers for most of the growing season. Butterflies favor this shrub, but hummingbirds and bees are also frequent visitors. The Blueberry Pie™ Butterfly Bush is low maintenance and grows as a perennial in zones 5 through 9.
Blueberry Pie™ Butterfly Bush Care
Plant this blooming shrub in full sun. A spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight is necessary for the Blueberry Pie™ Butterfly Bush to reach full size and consistently bloom. Use a rich, loamy soil that allows drainage. New plants need consistent water, but established plants often only need a drink during a dry period. Fertilize annually in late spring or early winter using a slow-release plant food formulated for shrubs.
Prune the Blueberry Pie™ Butterfly Bush to remove dead or damaged growth. Shape the shrub as needed or trim back overgrowth in early spring. The Blueberry Pie™ Butterfly Bush has a small growth habit and does not require frequent, if any, pruning sessions.
Blueberry Pie™ Butterfly Bush Spacing
The Blueberry Pie™ Butterfly Bush reaches 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. Space shrubs 2 to 3 feet apart to create a low hedge or feature one plant in a 16-inch wide container.
