You will love the large blue-purple flowers of the BlueBerry Smoothie Hibiscus when they open in mid-summer. Also known as Hibiscus syriacus 'DS01BS', this woody shrub develops stunning double blooms that contrast perfectly against its bright green, maple-like foliage. Its upright branches grow to around 4 to 5 feet tall. 

Known to attract butterflies and hummingbirds, this stunner is thankfully left alone by grazing deer. BlueBerry Smoothie is a vigorous grower that is considered winter hardy in zones 5 to 8. Plant it in a large container to enjoy as a specimen on a deck or add it to a mixed border. This hibiscus also makes an attractive flowering hedge.

BlueBerry Smoothie Hibiscus Care

The BlueBerry Smoothie Hibiscus loves full sun but can also tolerate a partially shaded spot. It can cope with most soil types and pH levels as long as the soil drains well. Water deeply and often until established, after which dry spells can be tolerated. A slow-release fertilizer applied in early spring will help support new growth and flowering.

Lightly prune to shape and remove any broken wood in late winter or early spring. Even though BlueBerry Smoothie is suitable for growing in a container, more frequent watering will be required compared to shrubs planted directly in the ground. 

BlueBerry Smoothie Hibiscus Spacing

Over time the BlueBerry Smoothie Hibiscus can grow to 4 to 5 feet tall and wide. A plant spacing of 4 to 6 feet will allow for well-defined shrubs. Alternatively, plant a little closer for hedging purposes.
