The Myrica pensylvanica Bobee™, or Bobee Northern Bayberry, is native to North America and found as far north as Newfoundland all the way south to North Carolina. Bobee Northern Bayberry is extremely versatile and hardy. Additionally, this is the perfect addition to a bird watcher’s garden! It attracts songbirds like chickadees, swallows, bluebirds, warblers and more. Bobee Northern Bayberry is a deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub, growing 6-8 feet tall. Its dense, rounded, dark green leaves have a fragrance of bay when crushed.
Bobee Northern Bayberry could be used in the garden as an informal hedge or border, and makes a lovely background for flower beds. It looks especially nice when planted next to native roses. The flowers of Bayberry appear as inconspicuous, yellowish-green spikes that are found on separate male and female plants. The female flowers, if pollinated, produce a small grayish-white fruit in late summer. This gorgeous shrub would be ideal for woodland gardens or planting on slopes to help control erosion. It may also be used along driveways or roadways that require salting during the winter months since the shrub is salt tolerant. Bobee Northern Bayberry is a very versatile shrub!
Bobee Northern Bayberry Care
This plant prefers well-drained soil and a position in full sun to part shade. Keep the plant moist until the roots are established, usually after a few months. Bobee Northern Bayberry tolerates many soil types. Sandy, slightly acidic soil is best, but these plants are highly adaptable. Bayberry prefers to grow in full sun, but will also grow in part shade.
Bobee Northern Bayberry is tolerant of environmental stresses such as heat, drought, poor soil and salt. In ideal conditions, this shrub suckers easily and will spread to form colonies. Prune away the suckers if you don’t want this plant to spread.
Bobee Northern Bayberry Spacing
The Bobee Northern Bayberry works well planted in groups or mass plantings as a border, screen, or a hedge. Space this shrub 3 to 6 feet apart for best results.
