The Boston Fern is easy to maintain and can work as a standalone statement plant or the perfect complement to a mixed planting. The Nephrolepis exaltata features long, arching fronds. Symmetrical leaflets are broad at the base and become progressively more narrow near the tip. The finely serrated edges provide additional texture. The bright green hue is vibrant and adds to the lush appeal of this fern.
This fern spreads gradually by underground runners called stolons to fill in an area. The upright, arching fronds add texture and bold color to a space. Use the Boston Fern in a mixed bed or create a lovely mass planting. Ferns work as fillers in containers, and the Boston Fern is spectacular in a hanging basket. Feature it in hanging baskets along a covered porch for a classic look, or include this fern in a mixed container for some lush greenery.
Boston Fern Care
Select a planting location in full to partial shade for a Boston Fern. Morning sun and afternoon shade provide the ideal sunlight conditions. This plant is not particular about soil as long as it is moist and well-drained. Keep the soil consistently damp, although this fern can handle dry conditions on occasion. Apply a balanced fertilizer every four to six weeks.
Landscape plants can be divided every few years as needed. The transplants recover the quickest when plants are divided in the spring or early summer. The Boston Fern grows as a perennial in zones 9 through 11. This fern is found as an annual in other areas, but can be grown as a houseplant during the winter.
Boston Fern Spacing
Boston Ferns reach 1 to 3 feet tall and wide. Space ferns 1 to 3 feet apart to create a dense planting. Grow one fern in a 12-inch wide container.
