Delphiniums have a reputation for being the drama queens of the cutting garden. Breezin Bee is bound to change minds. This is an easy-to-grow delphinium that keeps producing flower buds nonstop until the first frost of fall. The Delgenius™ range of delphiniums has been bred to bloom profusely on sturdy stems throughout the summer, no matter how hot and humid it may be. Breezin Bee has bicolored lavender-and-lilac flowers that mix well with pastels and bright colors in the garden and arrangements.
Breezin Bee is as cold hardy as it is heat tolerant and requires little extra protection for the winter. The sturdy stems can hold up the heavy flower spikes with no support. Even in wind or rainstorms, the stems will remain upright. Delphiniums are surprisingly not preferred by deer or rabbits. Even in areas with high deer populations, delphiniums are rarely browsed. Slugs and snails can be an issue as the new foliage emerges in spring.
Breezin Bee Delphinium Care
Delphiniums prefer well-drained soil that remains slightly moist at all times. They will tolerate drying a bit between waterings, but flowering is better on well-watered plants. Mulching with 2-3 inches of organic compost every year will help the soil to retain moisture while still draining freely. Fertilize in the spring with a slow-release, all-purpose garden fertilizer. An NPK ratio of 10-10-10 is ideal and will support the growth of foliage and flowers. Plant low-growing perennials and ground cover near delphiniums. They prefer sunny faces and shaded feet.
Deadheading will encourage delphiniums to keep producing flower buds. Cut the flower stem back to just above a set of leaves. This perennial naturally develops dense branching and doesn’t require pinching back in the spring. Cut off spent top growth in late fall and mulch over the growth crown with 3-4 inches of compost or shredded leaves. This mulch will help to insulate the roots during the winter.
Breezin Bee Delphinium Spacing
The mature height of Breezin Bee is 20-24 inches with a spread of 16-20 inches. Space plants 18 inches apart when mass planting in the ground. Delphinium grows well in containers with at least a 12-inch diameter or 5-gallon capacity.
