Gently arching plumes of flowers and deep green lacy foliage make the Bridal Veil Astilbe a lovely perennial to feature in a landscape. The Astilbe arendsii has tiny, pure white flowers that give the plant a feathery texture. The petite white flowers of this Astilbe start to bloom in June and stay in place through the end of July. The broad fern-like leaves have toothed edges and, during the spring, will have a tinge of bronze before settling into a deep green.
This plant can be used in beds, borders, or mass plantings, and it makes a striking addition to a woodland-inspired garden. The blooms also make wonderful cut flowers. This plant is deer-resistant for dependable flowers and greenery, but pollinators are likely to visit this beauty. As delicate as this plant looks, it is very hardy and grows as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
Bridal Veil Astilbe Care
This plant does very well in a shade garden, so a spot that receives about 4 hours of sunlight is ideal. Astilbe can live in full sunlight, but lower light is a better fit, especially when grown in warmer regions. Soil should be rich, moist but well-drained, and acidic. Bridal Veil Astilbe can live in damp conditions, but this plant has average water needs, so let the soil mostly dry out before giving it water.
Give the Astilbe a dose of balanced fertilizer in the spring. The growth will die back after the first frost but leave the dead growth in place during the winter to insulate the roots from the winter chill. Remove all of the dead growth in the spring.
Bridal Veil Astilbe Spacing
This darling perennial has an upright growth habit and will grow 24 to 36 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. When creating a dense mass planting, space plants 14 to 18 inches apart.
