Burgundy Glow Ajuga is a stunning ground cover with some of the most bright and lovely variegated foliage. The gently scalloped, textured leaves are green but have hints of purplish-pink and creamy white to varying degrees. Dainty, deep blue flowers bloom on upright spikes in May through June, and they add to the appeal, but the Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow' is really all about the foliage.
This Ajuga’s low, spreading growth habit makes it an excellent ground cover. The stems feature dense foliage that effectively covers the space in a mixed bed or rock garden. Use it to create a leafy border, conceal uneven ground, or aid in erosion control. Plant this Ajuga in a container and let the reaching stems cascade over the edge. The Burgundy Glow Ajuga is versatile and can live in full shade to full sun. Expect more abundant blooms and intense variegation when grown in increased sunlight. This adaptable ground cover is not picky about soil, but favors rich, slightly acidic soil that retains moisture but allows excess water to drain. Routinely water young plants to help them establish a robust root system. Mature plants are drought-tolerant, but water during a dry spell keeps them looking lush and growing. This leafy beauty is not a heavy feeder, but an annual dose of fertilizer is beneficial.
Trim dead or damaged growth and trim leggy stems if necessary. Ajuga plants tend to maintain a full form and rarely need pruning.
