Burgundy Lowbush Blueberry is a low-growing blueberry bush with gorgeous fall color. Small light-blue berries appear in July and can be enjoyed straight from the bush. Prior to fruiting, white bell-shaped flowers are visited by pollinators and make a lovely display. The leaves emerge burgundy-red with a glossy finish. They mature to gray-green in the summer and then turn fiery red in the fall. The bright red stems during the winter give this little shrub four seasons of interest.
This blueberry stays low to the ground, with a maximum height of 8 - 12 inches. It is deciduous and will go dormant in the winter. This blueberry is extremely cold hardy to zone 2 and has no concerning pests or diseases; however, you may need to protect the berries from hungry birds by using bird netting. You can plant Burgundy Lowbush for a low-hedge option, use them to edge a garden bed, group them in a foodscape, or add them to container gardens.
Burgundy Lowbush Blueberry Care
Burgundy Lowbush thrives in full sun with at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day. This blueberry tolerates poor soil as long as it drains wells. Blueberries prefer soil in the acidic pH range, between 4.5 - 5.5. You can lower the pH of your soil by adding amendments including sulfur and peat moss. Water your blueberry regularly during the growing season, especially if you are growing it in a container. Fertilize in early spring with a formula for acid-loving plants.
Burgundy lowbush does not require annual pruning. Every 2 - 3 years, remove the older stems in early spring to increase fruit production. You can also remove non-fruiting branches after harvest.
Burgundy Lowbush Blueberry Spacing
Space these blueberries approximately 2 feet apart on center to form a tight hedge. Increase the distance to 3 feet between plants if you would like space between plants. Use a container at least 24 inches in diameter to accommodate the spreading shallow roots.
