For the benefit and beauty of a rose garden without the fuss, Drift Roses are an excellent option. As a groundcover rose, the Buttercream Drift Rose (Rosa ‘Buttercream Drift’) is compact, growing 18-24 inches tall and 24-30 inches wide. The petite, creamy-yellow flowers are fragrant and bloom repeatedly throughout the summer. For a pollinator attractor without the constant need for pruning and attention, Drift Roses are a must.
Once established, the Buttercream Drift Rose is relatively drought and heat tolerant. One of the greatest benefits of a Drift Rose is its disease resistance. While the Buttercream Drift Rose is not deer resistant, its resilience and ability to rebloom help it grow back and bloom quickly after being disturbed. Drift Roses are low maintenance and easy to care for, perfect as a pop of color in a garden or planted together in a low-growing hedge. Its petite size makes it a perfect rose for containers as well.
Buttercream Drift Rose Care
To plant the Buttercream Drift Rose, dig a hole that is at least twice the width and equal depth as the root ball. Drift Roses grow best in full sun, planted in well-draining, neutral soil. While Drift Roses perform well without fertilizer, a rose-specific fertilizer can be applied the first year after planting and once the first round of blooms has finished in the early summer. Provide the Buttercream Drift Rose with regular watering through its first year and during the hottest, driest months.
Drift Roses do not require deadheading as they naturally rebloom every 5-6 weeks. Weak or spindly branches can be pruned to maintain the Buttercream’s compact shape. While Drift Roses are cold hardy, providing them with 2-3 inches of mulch will help protect the roots from extreme cold. Drift Roses can also be wrapped in burlap in the coldest regions to further insulate the plant. If kept in a container, be sure to move Drift Roses into a protected garage over the winter.
Buttercream Drift Rose Spacing
Plant Drift Roses about 3-5 feet apart. To keep Drift Roses in a container, choose a pot with drainage that is about twice the size of the current pot. Be sure to provide plenty of sunlight; and water it regularly.
