Daylilies are the epitome of a plant-it and forget-it perennial. Buttered Popcorn Daylily is a variety of the popular Stella D’Oro. This daylily is tough and long blooming encouraging all kinds of pollinators and brightening any sunny garden border.
Buttered Popcorn is pest and disease resistant to the point that almost nothing will keep it from always looking its best. Deer and rabbits do not browse this herbaceous perennial. The blooms are great additions to a flower arrangement. Planting Daylily as an edging plant in the Cottage garden or along a driveway or sidewalk is a traditional use. Planting a group in individual containers for a deck or patio gives this old fashioned bloomer a modern makeover.
Buttered Popcorn Daylily Care
Daylilies can be placed in any sunny spot that has well draining soil. Good drainage is important particularly over the winter when the roots of Daylily can rot in cold, waterlogged soils. Buttered Popcorn is not picky about soil pH or texture, performing well in just about any site. Fertilizing should be done early in the spring as the new shoots emerge. A well balanced. Slow release feed will support vigorous growth all summer.
Cutting back Daylily is easily done at the end of the summer when it naturally begins to die down for the winter. Mulching in the colder hardiness zones will help Buttered Popcorn to weather harsh winters easily. Daylilies have such dense amounts of foliage that using a soaker hose or drip irrigation for watering is much more efficient than overhead sprinkling. Consistent watering is needed when container growing Buttered Popcorn.
Buttered Popcorn Daylily Spacing
Buttered Popcorn Daylily has the perfect compact shape of a Stella D’Oro Daylily. Dense and stout, it does not need supplemental staking while in bloom. The mature height is 24-36 inches at blooming, with a width of 12-24 inches. Spacing plants at 30 inches on center is recommended.
