Butterfly African Iris (Dietes iridioides 'Butterfly') is a striking perennial with upright sword-like foliage with delicate white flowers marked in yellow and violet. Its evergreen clumps measure about 2 to 4 feet tall, with blooms rising above the leaves from spring into late summer. Each flower lasts briefly, but new buds follow in repeat cycles that give the planting a steady seasonal display. Our landscape designer likes it near water features because the foliage looks clean between flower cycles and it thrives in moist settings.
This rhizomatous perennial is native to parts of Africa and is commonly called fortnight lily for the two-week bloom pattern many plants follow. Butterfly African Iris is low maintenance, drought tolerant once established, and useful for adding grassy texture and floral detail. It can grow in moist soil and even tolerate brief flooding, though long periods of standing water are not ideal. Plant it in borders, mass plantings, pond edges, rock gardens, containers, or as a textural accent in warm-zone landscapes.
Butterfly African Iris Care
Plant Butterfly African Iris in full sun to partial shade, with afternoon shade helpful in hot climates. It grows best in moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil, but it also adapts to clay, loam, and sandy soil. A slightly acidic to slightly alkaline pH of about 6.0 to 8.0 is suitable.
Butterfly African Iris appreciates ample moisture. Water deeply after planting and keep the root zone consistently moist during the first growing season. Established plants tolerate temporary dry soil, but weekly soaking during summer supports better flowering. Fertilize in early spring, early summer, and late summer with an organic plant food or use aged compost as a light topdressing. In cold climates, grow it as an annual, lift and store rhizomes indoors, or overwinter containers in a protected space.
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more bloom cycles and reduce seed production. Remove damaged foliage any time it appears, then clean older leaves more thoroughly in late winter or early spring. Divide crowded clumps every few years when flowering slows or the planting becomes too dense.
Butterfly African Iris Spacing
Space Butterfly African Iris 12 to 24 inches apart for mass plantings or groundcover-style coverage. Use 24 to 36 inches apart when you want each clump to show as an individual accent. For containers, choose a pot at least 14 to 18 inches wide with drainage holes, and keep the mix evenly moist through warm weather.
Along pond edges or moist borders, combine Butterfly African Iris with papyrus and sedge for layered upright foliage that handles similar moisture. Sweetspire can sit behind the planting where its arching shrub form and seasonal flowers add height without crowding the iris clumps. In containers, use bacopa or elephant ears with Butterfly African Iris and provide steady moisture and bright filtered light.
