The Cake Pops™ Pink Tuberous Verbena can effortlessly handle the heat and humidity of summer, making this a great performer in hanging baskets and beds in the south. The Verbena rigida boasts clusters of delicate pink flowers that grow at the ends of tall stems surrounded by thin, oblong green foliage. This mounding plant is typically used as a filler in containers. Blooms continue to emerge throughout the spring, summer, and fall.
This plant is native to the southern U.S., so it is naturally heat-, humidity- and drought-tolerant. The Cake Pops™ Pink Tuberous Verbena, is very well suited to the climate of the south and thrives with very little care. Use Verbena in borders, landscapes, and containers. This plant attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, and it is deer-resistant, ensuring you can enjoy its good looks all season long. The Cake Pops™ Pink Tuberous Verbena grows as a perennial in USDA zones 7, 8, 9, and 10. The plant is an annual in all other zones.
Cake Pops® Pink Tuberous Verbena Plant Care
While this Verbena is drought-tolerant, it is best to ensure the plant has plenty to drink to maintain its abundant blooms. This variety prefers consistently damp soil, so water when the top layer is still moist. While this plant likes moisture, it still does best with well-draining soil. The optimal soil will have a pH of 6.1 - 7.5. Lots of sun will promote new growth, so find a spot with at least 4 to 6 hours of daily sunlight exposure. Fertilize in the spring and again midsummer to ensure continuous blooms. Feed container plants every 2 months for improved performance.
Deadheading is not ordinarily necessary but remove spent flowers. An overall trim can keep the plant looking perky and lush, especially as the summer wears on. Cut back up to ⅓ of the growth if the plant seems overgrown and follow up with fertilizer to promote new growth.
Cake Pops® Pink Tuberous Verbena Plant Spacing
The Cake Pops™ Pink Tuberous Verbena is a mounding plant, so it will grow to be full and somewhat large. A healthy, mature plant can be 10 to 18 inches tall and just as wide. Verbena rigida planted in the ground should be spaced 8 to 12 inches apart, and a 12-inch pot can accommodate 2 plants.
