Enjoy beautiful flowers all summer long with the Cake Pops™ Purple Tuberous Verbena. This plant is native to North America, particularly the southern U.S., so it can easily take on high heat and humidity, all while looking stunning. Tiny, fragrant flowers grow in an inflorescence or cluster at the end of long stems. The purple variety boasts lavender blooms that maintain consistent color throughout the spring, summer, and fall.
Oblong green foliage creates a full appearance that rounds out the look of this mounding plant. Verbena is common in borders, landscapes, and containers, and it is an excellent filler plant. This durable plant can handle high heat and humidity and is drought-tolerant. It welcomes pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds while not being so hospitable to deer. The Cake Pops™ Purple Tuberous Verbena can be found in USDA zones 7, 8, 9, and 10 as a perennial, and it is grown as an annual in other zones.
Cake Pops® Purple Tuberous Verbena Plant Care
This low-maintenance plant flourishes with little care, although minor attention will ensure it continues to thrive all season long. Plant in full sun to ensure optimal growth. Water when the top layer of the soil feels moist. Established plants may not need water very often, but container-grown Verbena will likely need water every few days. Use well-draining soil with 6.1 - 7.5 pH. Feed plants in the spring and again midsummer. Container plants need to be fed every 2 months.
Remove spent flowers to keep a neat appearance. This plant may look tired or overgrown halfway through the summer, so give it an overall trim to freshen it up and promote new growth.
Cake Pops® Purple Tuberous Verbena Plant Spacing
A healthy Verbena will be about as wide as tall, so expect the plant to be about 10 to 18 inches all around. Space plants 8 to 12 inches apart when in the ground, and a 12-inch pot is large enough for 2 plants.
