Foliage Interest

The Campfire Crassula is a succulent with thick leaves that turn from light green to bright red as it matures. The color is brightest during winter due to long cool nights and bright sunny days. This evergreen succulent has branching foliage but only reaches up to 6 inches tall. However, 1 plant can reach up to 3 feet wide once mature. In the summer, the plant produces white flower clusters.

Use these drought tolerant succulents in sandy locations, rock gardens, retaining walls or as a groundcover. We also enjoy planting these in garden containers with other succulents to create a low maintenance centerpiece that provides color all year. These plants are also known as Red Flames, Red Pagoda or Campfire Plant. The plants are a great groundcover in warmer coastal areas that do not get below 30 degrees.

Growing Campfire Crassula

These do best in partial sun, and need some shade in hotter areas especially during the afternoon. Once established, Campfire Crassula require watering during long periods of drought over a month. The plants need well drained soil and do not handle temperatures below 30 °F. Native to southern Africa.
