Aster family member, Campfire® Marshmallow™ Bidens, features cheerful composite blooms, each with a gilded disk encircled by milk-white rays. Also known as Bidenshybrid, this long-blooming annual flowers from spring until autumn’s first heavy frost. There’s no need to deadhead to encourage additional blooming–this ornamental “self-cleans”. Pollinators, including bees and butterflies, adore it! With its showy flowers providing three seasons of interest, this wildflower is also highly heat tolerant; its brightly colored florets will appear as stunning in summer as in spring.
With an extended flowering season, Campfire® Marshmallow™ Bidens outdoes its close neighbor, coreopsis. The deep green foliage forms a vigorous clump. Growing to 8 to 14 inches high and 16-20 inches wide, Campfire® Marshmallow™ Bidens’ compact size makes it ideal for planting in containers including hanging baskets. Plant it as a specimen, or group a few together to create an accent in beds and borders. With its heat-tolerant, pristine white petals, Campfire® Marshmallow™ will brighten yards, decks, patios, entryways, and porches from spring through fall with minimal stress.
Campfire® Marshmallow™ Bidens Care
To encourage robust blooming, plant Campfire® Marshmallow™ in full sun. This plant tolerates a variety of soil types, including nutrient-deficient soil. For best performance, plant it in soil that’s slightly acidic and well draining. This wildflower is drought tolerant once established; however to better support flowering, provide about an inch of water per week. Fertilizer is not typically needed for landscape plantings.
Despite its long blooming season, Campfire® Marshmallow™ Bidens requires no deadheading. The only other pruning that may be needed is light trimming to control size or shape. For potted plants, you may want to apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer at the time of planting and then monthly to support blooming.
Campfire® Marshmallow™ Bidens Spacing
Space each plant 16 inches apart. Plant as a specimen in a container with a top wide enough to accommodate this annual’s spreading mound of foliage. Plant in beds and borders with companion plants such as cosmos, coreopsis, poppies, marigolds, and dahlias.
