Candy Cloud™ Pink Phlox ('Balcloudink') forms a dense, mounded plant that reaches 14–16 inches tall and wide, covered in clear pink flowers for a carpet-like effect. Instead of a brief scatter of blooms, you get heavy, uniform flower coverage. The bloom time makes it a smarter choice than many spring bloomers that peak too early and leave a lull before summer. Our designers use it to keep front borders looking intentional through mid-spring.
The habit stays rounded and full, so it works as a defined edging plant without relying on hard pruning or constant correction. Flowers are attractive to early-season pollinators, adding movement and activity when the garden is just getting started. In mass plantings it creates a clean “base layer” that supports taller perennials as they emerge, and in containers it functions as a substantial filler. The pink tone plays well with spring bulbs and fresh foliage, but it also holds its own beside bolder late-spring colors.
Candy Cloud™ Pink Phlox Care
Plant so the crown sits at soil level and avoid burying the stems when backfilling. Give it full sun to partial sun, with morning sun and light afternoon shade in hotter areas to keep the plant dense and flowering well. Choose a site that drains freely after rain, and amend with compost if your soil is very sandy or heavily compacted. Water deeply at planting, then check moisture a few inches down and irrigate when that zone begins to dry, adjusting during warm, windy weeks. Feed lightly once a month during active growth if you’re growing in containers or lean soil, but reduce fertilizing in richer beds to prevent soft, floppy growth.
After the main bloom finishes, shear the plant back by about one-third to refresh the mound and encourage clean new foliage. In late fall or early spring, trim away winter-tired stems to expose new growth and maintain the plant’s rounded outline.
Candy Cloud™ Pink Phlox Spacing
Space plants 16–18 inches apart for a continuous front-edge band that closes quickly without crowding. In containers, a 14–16 inch pot gives enough room for the mound to fill in while staying proportional to taller center plants. Pair it with coral bells for contrasting leaf shape and ornamental alliums for late-spring structure that rises cleanly through the pink canopy.
