Candy Stripe Moss Phlox is a low-growing evergreen perennial that provides easy spots of color. Also known as Phlox subulata 'Candy Stripe', it erupts with cheerful white flowers striped with bubblegum pink in the spring. The needle-like, dark green foliage provides a fine texture to the landscape all year round. This perennial is easy to grow and is a great selection for many challenging sites.
Candy Stripe Moss Phlox grows in a low mat of evergreen foliage that spreads to 2 – 3 feet wide. It tolerates heat better than garden phlox and will become drought tolerant once established. It is attractive to butterflies and bees, but not palatable to deer and rabbits. This phlox is a wonderful addition to rock gardens and sunny slopes and works equally well for edging a pathway or garden bed.
Candy Stripe Moss Phlox Care
This phlox performs best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. It prefers sandy, well-drained soil of average fertility. It adapts to a wide range of soil pH levels. It has average water needs and should be watered regularly during the first couple growing seasons to establish the roots. Apply a layer of mulch to the surface after planting to conserve moisture.
Cut back the plant by one-half after flowering to promote new growth and a second flush of blooms. Any foliage tattered over the winter can be trimmed up in spring.
Candy Stripe Moss Phlox Spacing
If planting as a groundcover, space Candy Stripe approximately 2 feet apart, allowing them to form a dense carpet over a large area. They also grow well in containers that are at least 18 inches in diameter. Choose a frost-proof container that has good drainage and won’t tip over in windy conditions.
