Red roses are romantic, especially when they are found on an easy-to-grow, compact bush like the Canyon Road Rose (Rosa ‘Canyon Red’). Layers of lightly scented, brick-red petals emerge in late spring from glossy, dark green leaves. The Canyon Road Rose blooms are excellent as cut flowers or can remain on the bush to attract pollinators and add a punch of color to a garden. The Canyon Road grows 2-3 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide, making it a versatile shrub for any sunny garden.

The Canyon Road Rose’s size and growth habit make it perfect for a deciduous hedge or planted in large containers. This rose needs minimal pruning, requiring less maintenance than some fussier rose varieties. Disease resistance is important when looking for roses, and the Canyon Road is one such rose.

Canyon Road Rose Care

To plant the Canyon Road Rose, dig a hole that is at least twice the width and of equal depth as the root ball. Roses grow best when placed in full to part sun and planted in rich, loamy, well-draining soil, so amend as needed. Apply rose-specific, slow-release fertilizer in the spring and again in the summer to aid in new growth and blooming. In the first year, water the Canyon Road Rose regularly, maintaining consistently moist but not soggy soil. Once established, allow the soil to dry out slightly and water deeply in the hottest months. It is important to avoid wetting the leaves of roses as this can spread foliar diseases.

The Canyon Road Rose is typically lush with branches that reach the ground. In the late winter, once the threat of a deep freeze has passed, prune this rose for shape and to remove any leggy or damaged branches. When roses are reaching the end of their bloom period, they can be deadheaded, making the plant appear neater and reducing the risk of fungal infection.

Canyon Road Rose Spacing

Plant the Canyon Road Rose about 4 feet from other plants and structures to allow it room to grow to its natural size. When creating a flowering hedge or mass planting, these roses can be planted slightly closer together. If growing in a container, choose a pot that is at least twice the width of the root ball to allow for growth; bring the pot into a protected space like a garage in the winter.
