Viburnum ‘Cardinal Candy’ is considered to be one of the best fruiting viburnums for American gardens according to Dr. Michael Dirr! So what is there to love about this shrub? Fabulous red berries in the fall that attract birds and other wildlife, long, dark green lustrous leaves beautiful white flowers is May and June! The flowers are great for pollinators of all sizes, including bees and butterflies. If there are any berries left over to the following spring, you can watch the male cardinals court the females by feeding them the berries!
This native viburnum is on the larger side making it ideal for using as a grouping, borders or as a hedge for privacy in the landscape! It is best to have two viburnum for cross pollination to produce lots and lots of berries. This viburnum is deciduous which means it loses its leaves in the fall but not without a great show of burgundy and bronze foliage first.
Cardinal Candy Viburnum Care
Cardinal Candy Viburnum prefers an average soil and will handle long periods of little to no rain once established. Full to part sun is ideal and little to no pruning is needed unless for a crossed or broken branch. If necessary, pruning cardinal Candy Viburnum should be done immediately after flowering. Viburnums prefer a slow release fertilizer for acid loving plants so no need to worry about fertilizing every week. And added bonus is it is deer resistant, disease resistant, and insect resistant! This shrub is also drought tolerant once established.
This plant will produce fruit without cross pollination. However, planting near another Viburnum dilatatum will help the plant produce abundant berries. The other viburnum should be within 60 feet in order to cross-pollinate.
Cardinal Candy Viburnum Spacing
This viburnum is on the larger size so it grows 6-8 ft. tall and just as wide. So plant it 8-10 ft. apart if using it as a hedge on center, in a large planter, or as the focal point of your landscape! This viburnum grows from Zones 5a-8b so you can live almost anywhere and grow this fantastic shrub!
