Add color to arbors, pergolas, fences, and containers with the striking crimson color of Clematis ‘Cardinal Wyszynski’. The flowers are a combination of rosy and wine red for a rich, warm feel. Plus, they are huge, reaching 6 to 8 inches around. This pretty climber can add a touch of elegance to any landscape, deck, or patio with its double bloom seasons of June to July, repeated in September.
The vine can grow in a container or in the ground, which makes it a flexible landscaping choice. Planting several near a structure can have a rich and striking effect, with each reaching 8 to 10 feet in length and about 2 feet in width. Clematis flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. They are resistant to deer and rabbits. Grow Cardinal Wyszynski in nearly any garden spot in zones 4 through 8, but be sure to place it where you can enjoy watching pollinators flock to the big, red flowers.
Cardinal Wyszynski Clematis Care
Your clematis needs good soil that drains well and a trellis or other structure to climb. Since the vines climb upward, they can get sun even when the roots are in shade. In fact, this is the ideal condition for growing clematis--shaded roots but enough sun for the stems to soak up. In hotter zones, afternoon shade helps protect the plant even more. Water your clematis regularly, a little more often if growing in a container. The plant does not do well if the soil is left dry.
This red stunner needs heavy feeding to keep up with its seasonal growth and big blooms, so add compost to the soil each spring to make it more fertile. You also should fertilize your clematis each spring with a balanced fertilizer, and again in mid-summer. This clematis is in pruning group 2. This means flowers appear on both old stems (in its early summer bloom) and new ones (in late summer and early fall). Prune lightly in February and again after the first flowering stops for best results.
Cardinal Wyszynski Clematis Spacing
With its climbing growth habit, you can be flexible about how far apart you plant Clematis ‘Cardinal Wyszynski’ and then train it to wrap and trail where you like. Just avoid planting groups any closer together than 1 or 2 feet.
