Feature
Cascade Hops is an aromatic vining plant named after the Cascade Mountain range. These herbaceous perennials produce green cones used to flavor beer. This hop variety is often used for brewing ales, pale ales, and IPAs. The cone’s aroma is spicy with hints of citrus. The reaching vines can grow 25 feet tall and feature dark foliage with serrated edges. Harvest the cones in late summer when they appear dry and have a papery texture. Mature vines can produce up to 2 pounds of dried flowers.
Cascade Hops Care
Plant Cascade hops in the spring after there is no longer a threat of frost. Cascade hop plants need full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Space plants 3 feet apart and provide a trellis so each plant can grow vertically. Fungus and mildew are common problems, so space plants far enough apart to allow air to circulate around the leaves, and water the ground around the plant, keeping the foliage as dry as possible.
Growing Cascade Hops
Hops do not bloom the first year but expect flowers and a harvest starting in the second year. Established plants need 120 frost-free days to set buds. Hops are vining plants, and a tall trellis or support is vital for these plants to grow and thrive. Cascade hops can reach 25 feet tall, so give the plants appropriate support.
Cascade hops can grow in containers. Select a 12-inch wide pot with drainage holes, and provide a trellis or support for the vine.
Watering Cascade Hops
Mature Cascade Hops plants need 2 to 3 gallons of water every 2 to 3 days. Plants grown in warm climates or experiencing a dry spell may need water more often.
Feeding Cascade Hops
Fertilize cascade hops in late spring or early summer. Use a plant food with low phosphorous levels to support growth.
