Evergreen plants, like the Cast in Bronze® Distylium, add color to a landscape year-round and will be a focal point of a bed or planting. This fast-growing, upright, rounded evergreen pushes out bronze foliage with hints of maroon that eventually transition to shiny, dark green. The oval-shaped foliage comes to a gentle point and features a light green midrib and veining. This plant is all about the foliage, but small red flowers bloom in the spring.

Use this plant as a medium-sized hedge or screen or to add color along a foundation. At 3 to 4 feet tall, this dwarf plant will do well towards the rear of a garden bed or landscaped area. This shrub is also easy to maintain, primarily because it is drought tolerant and disease resistant, making it an excellent option for inexperienced or more laid-back gardeners. The Cast in Bronze® Distylium is a perennial in USDA zones 7 through 9.

Cast in Bronze® Distylium Plant Care

Newly planted Distylium will need a consistent watering routine, and established plants will only need water during dry weather. This plant is prone to root rot, so use well-draining soil that will allow the roots to dry out. The soil should also be acidic to slightly acidic and range from 5.0 to 6.5 pH. Plant in full sun to part shade.

Apply fertilizer starting in the spring and continuing throughout the growing season to promote healthy growth. This plant does not require much pruning, but give it a trim in the spring if it needs to be cleaned up or re-shaped.

Cast in Bronze® Distylium Plant Spacing

A mature Distylium will be 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. Space the plants 2 to 3 feet apart to create a hedge or a seamless mass planting. Place plants 4 to 5 feet apart to showcase each individual plant.
