Catwalk Queen Catmint (Nepeta) is a standout perennial known for its oversized lavender-blue blooms that consistently outperform standard varieties. Each flowering stem carries elongated panicles, packed with flowers nearly twice the size of typical catmint, offering unmatched visual impact from early summer into fall. The thick, upright stems and compact mounding habit make it a reliable border or container choice. In our trial gardens, 'Catwalk Queen' has been one of the longest blooming catmints, with a clean habit and excellent garden presence even in the height of summer.
Beyond the flowers, the aromatic foliage has a dense, leathery texture that resists browsing by deer and rabbits. It grows naturally in a neat, low mound, making it suitable for edging paths, surrounding taller perennials, or massing in larger plantings. Once established, it's tolerant of drought and heat, thriving with little supplemental care. Native to dry regions of Europe and Asia, Nepeta hybrids like ‘Catwalk Queen’ are particularly well adapted to modern, water-wise gardens. It pairs easily with a wide range of full sun perennials in cottage, prairie, and rock garden settings.
Catwalk Queen Catmint Care
Plant in full sun for best flowering, though light afternoon shade is tolerated in warmer climates. 'Catwalk Queen' performs well in a range of soils, from lean, rocky substrates to average garden loam, as long as drainage is good. Ideal soil pH is neutral to alkaline (pH 7.0+). Avoid overwatering, especially in humid regions. In poor soils, a small amount of compost in early spring is sufficient; do not over-fertilize, as this reduces flowering. Water deeply when newly planted, then reduce frequency once roots establish.
Shear plants back by half after their first bloom to encourage a longer flowering season. A second light pruning in late summer can refresh the foliage and promote additional flowers into fall. For winter, leave the top growth in place to protect the crown, and cut back to the base in early spring. This variety is excellent for containers as well; just ensure your pot has good drainage and isn’t overly rich in nutrients.
Catwalk Queen Catmint Spacing
Space plants 18–20 inches apart when planting in borders or mass groupings to allow for mature spread and airflow. For edging or groundcover use, stagger in a triangular layout for better coverage. In containers, use a pot that is at least 12 inches wide to accommodate root growth. For companion planting, pair with drought-tolerant, sun-loving varieties like tickseed, shasta daisies, or artemisia for a contrast in color and texture.
