This little evergreen shrub, Cavatine Dwarf Pieris, is about as versatile as a small shrub can be. Also going by the name Cavatine Dwarf Andromeda, this Pieris japonica packs a landscaping punch into a small package. In spring, the shrub shows off a mass of tiny white, bell-shaped flowers that fill the top of the plant. In winter, the leather-like foliage stays green to keep your yard looking alive on cold days.
Hardy in zones 5 through 8, this plant thrives in half-day shade, allowing you to place it against a structure or under the shade of a tree. It’s deer resistant but attracts butterflies to the white flowers. Cavatine Dwarf Pieris grows to only about 2 to 3 feet around and high, but if you plant one as part of a group, you can add interest to a woodland garden, form a low border, or simply show off the striking year-round color of one or two shrubs.
Cavatine Dwarf Pieris Care
Pieris shrubs prefer acidic soil, so be sure to add some organic matter to support acidity at planting time. The soil also should drain well, allowing the roots to dry slightly between weekly waterings. Once established, the perennial needs average and consistent water, and might need a little extra water in the weeks after planting.
Cavatine Pieris needs little fertilizing, but adding a product designed for azaleas and rhododendrons in late winter can give it a boost to grow and help lower the pH. It seldom needs pruning, but you can trim it to shape after it finishes flowering in late spring. Be aware that Pieris plants can be highly toxic to people, dogs, and cats, so use caution when planting and supervise children and pets when near the plant.
Cavatine Dwarf Pieris Spacing
For a bright white spring border and a deep green winter color, place your cavatines about 2.5 to 3 feet apart.
