Growing Zones
Ninebark is a hardy flowering shrub that is known for its striking foliage. Lobed leaves have gently toothed edges. The foliage is yellowish-green at the start of the growing season but transitions into a dark red with hints of purple by the fall. The Physocarpus Center Glow features lovely pink flowers in June. While this shrub is deciduous, it continues to provide visual interest all year, thanks to the exfoliating red bark that offers up some color in a drab winter landscape.
An upright, dense growth makes this shrub a wonderful hedge, border, or foundation planting. Add a burst of color to a mass planting or create a focal point in a landscape. This plant is generally deer-resistant and native to North America, ensuring it is easy to maintain. This cultivar grows as a perennial in USDA zones 2 through 8.
Center Glow Ninebark Care
Ninebark shrubs need full sun to partial shade. Moist soil that is well-drained and fertile is necessary. New plants need water once or twice a week, but established plants are drought-tolerant. Feed Ninebark using a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring and add a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant for an extra boost.
This plant has an appealing size and shape, so pruning is not generally necessary. Remove crossed branches or damaged growth in the early spring. This plant also blooms on old wood, so prune as needed after the flowers fade. Give the plant a rejuvenating trim every few years to encourage more growth.
Center Glow Ninebark Spacing
Center Glow Ninebark is an upright plant with arching branches that will grow 4 to 6 feet tall and wide. Plant shrubs 3 to 5 feet apart to create a hedge or give the plants more room to create a focal point.
