Growing Zones
This fig produces medium-sized figs with yellow skin and gold to caramel-colored edible flesh. The eye on each fruit is partially closed. It’s a great choice for fresh eating and preserving. This fig produces an early smaller crop and a second larger crop each year. The main crop ripens and is ready for harvest in July. Allow the fruit to ripen on the plant.
Plant this easy to grow deciduous tree as a specimen plant, as part of a home orchard or in a container garden. This self-fertile fig tree can be grown in USDA plant hardiness zones 7 to 10 in partial to full sun conditions. Fig trees have little stress from pests and diseases since they are not widely grown in the US. Champaign Fig was developed by the fig breeding program at the LSU Agricultural Center in 1977.
Champagne Fig Care
Ficus carica L.'Champagne' will reach a height of 12 to 15 feet and a width of 8 to 10 feet at maturity. It’s a vigorous grower but can be pruned if a smaller size is desired, especially when grown as a container plant. Champagne Fig is fairly drought tolerant once established but water during extended periods without rainfall to prevent leaf and fruit drop in addition to early dormancy.
Champagne Fig Spacing
Space trees 8 to 10 feet apart, center on center. That will allow enough space to get around the trees to harvest the fruit. It will also ensure the plant gets enough sunlight.
