Chantay Delphinium is an outstanding addition to the Delgenius® line of Delphiniums. These hardy and sturdy plants have large flower spikes that rarely require staking and remain visible at the back of a cottage garden or in a container arrangement on a deck or patio. Chantay produces loads of rosy pink flowers with a white center that are on display from early summer to the first frost in fall.
Delgenius® Delphiniums tolerate heat and humidity better than older varieties, maintaining their floral display without fading back in mid-summer. Chantay is low maintenance and has high resistance to pests and diseases, making it a great choice for garden beds or container gardens. Deer rarely give Delphiniums a second glance. The flowers are as long-lasting in a vase as they are on the plant and also dry beautifully for year-round arranging.
Chantay Delphinium Care
Delphinium prefers slightly acidic (5.5-6.0 pH), well-draining soil. Full to part sun produces the best flower show and helps the plants grow sturdy and strong. In the warmest growing zones (7-9), Delphiniums will benefit from some shade during the hottest part of the day. Regular fertilizing helps plants to maintain intense foliage and flower color. Apply a balanced, granular feed early in the spring as the new growth emerges and then again as the flower buds are forming early in the summer. Supplemental watering will be needed during extended periods of drought and heat.
Pinching to encourage more side shoots is not necessary for Chantay Delphinium. This cultivar naturally has a dense branching pattern, producing many more flower spikes than older types. Deadheading will help to keep the plants tidy through the growing season and may encourage another flush of flowering later in the season. Cut back the spent foliage after frost in the fall, and mulch near the plant crowns with 3-4 inches of shredded leaves, arborist chips, or pine straw.
Chantay Delphinium Spacing
The foliage of Chantay Delphinium grows into a compact mound 24 inches tall and wide. Space each plant 18 inches apart on the center when planting in a garden bed. Select a 3-gallon or 12-inch diameter pot for container planting.
