With its scented purple-red blooms, the Charles Joly Lilac is a joy to behold. Also known as Syringa vulgaris 'Charles Joly', this lilac can grow from 8 to 15 feet tall. Loved by pollinators and hummingbirds, its double flowers are also ideal for cutting and bringing into the home. It was awarded the prestigious ‘Award of Garden Merit’ by the Royal Horticultural Society.
Being deer-resistant makes this lilac shrub ideal for a rural spot. It forms an upright habit of attractive heart-shaped foliage that is ideal as a backdrop for other plants. This shrub is cold hardy and suitable for growing in USDA zones 3 to 8. Impressive enough to grow as a specimen, you can also add Charles Joly Lilac to a mixed border or use it to form an informal and fragrant hedge.
Charles Joly Lilac Care
This lilac can cope with some partial shade. However, for the best blooms, it should be grown in full sun. It prefers a fertile and well-drained soil that is either neutral or alkaline. To keep the soil moist, regular irrigation is required. To help prevent disease, avoid getting the foliage wet and ensure good air circulation. An organic mulch and balanced fertilizer will help support a dazzling display of blooms come late spring.
To avoid losing the following year's blooms, Charles Joly Lilac should be deadheaded and pruned immediately after flowering. Removing up to one-third of the oldest stems back to the ground will help encourage new growth and promote good ventilation.
Charles Joly Lilac Spacing
When mature, the Charles Joly Lilac can reach a height and spread of 8 to 15 feet tall by 8 to 12 feet. When growing as a group or in a row, you can plant this lilac at a spacing of around 10 to 12 feet apart.
