Coneflowers give a bed or outdoor space a summertime vibe, and the Cheyenne Spirit Coneflower or Echinacea takes things to the next level with flowers in bold hues. The elliptical-shaped petals open so far that they start to bend backward to reveal the extended dark brown seed cone. The striking blooms are in red, orange, pink, and yellow shades for a burst of vibrant color. Flowers bloom during the summer on top of thin stems with dark green foliage near the base of the plant.
Grow this perennial in beds, borders, mass plantings, containers, or any area needing some color. Trim some of the stems to use the blooms as cut flowers. The Cheyenne Spirit Coneflower is drought-tolerant and attracts butterflies. This plant is deer-resistant for added convenience. Grow this Coneflower as a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
Cheyenne Spirit Coneflower Care
Coneflowers are adaptable and can handle full sun to partial shade. Plant in average soil that is moist and well-drained and water when the top few inches of the soil are dry. Established plants are drought-tolerant, but giving the plant water during a dry period supports continued growth. Coneflowers are not heavy feeders, but a light dose of balanced fertilizer in the spring will encourage abundant blooms.
Remove spent flowers to clean up the appearance and promote more flowers. Growth can be cut back during the fall or left in place to self-seed and provide a food source for birds.
Cheyenne Spirit Coneflower Spacing
The lovely blooms of the Cheyenne Spirit Coneflower will grow 18 to 30 inches tall and cover an area of 10 to 20 inches. Plants can be grown as close as 10 to 20 inches apart to create a full, lush bed.
