Although small in form, the pink flowers of the Chinzan Azalea really pack a punch when they bloom in late spring. Also known as Rhododendron satsuki 'Chinzan', this dwarf azalea grows to no more than 1 to 2 feet tall and is perfect for smaller outdoor spaces. With the main flush of flowers developing in May, it can also rebloom throughout the summer.

The evergreen Chinzan Azalea produces neat little mounds of dark green foliage, which contrast its pink flowers. It needs little ongoing care and is considered a low-maintenance shrub. This azalea is ideal for growing in a small or large group or for lining a pathway. It is also perfectly suited to growing in a container and is winter hardy in USDA zones 6a to 9b.

Chinzan Azalea Care

The Chinzan Azalea performs best when it is grown in partial shade and protected from strong afternoon light. It prefers rich and acidic soil that is moist but well drained. Water regularly, aiming to keep the soil moist and the foliage dry. Fertilizing is not generally required. Nevertheless, you can boost growth by providing fresh mulch each spring.

Minimal if any pruning is needed. Light pruning can be performed after the first flowers in spring have finished to clean up old growth. When growing in a container, more frequent irrigation will be required to keep the soil from drying out.

Chinzan Azalea Spacing

The Chinzan Azalea can reach a mature size of 1 to 2 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Space plants 3 to 5 feet apart for a defined shape or closer when forming a low hedge.
