Prolific blooming and a compact growth habit make the Chrysalis™ Blue butterfly bush really pop in the landscape. On this Buddleia hybrid, rich purple flowers grace the ends of arching branches from spring through summer. As the name of this perennial suggests, the fragrant flowers attract butterflies, but hummingbirds and bees are also drawn to the blooms. A compact growth habit means this cultivar, also known as ‘Balchrylu’, is an excellent candidate for urban gardens and other small spaces like around patios or within a mixed perennial bed.
In USDA zone 5, this butterfly bush will die back to the ground and is root hardy. In warmer areas the stem is also hardy. The Chrysalis™ blue selection is resistant to downy mildew and once established offers excellent drought and rain tolerance. As a compact cultivar with a mounded habit, the Chrysalis™ may even be a good selection for container growing.
Chrysalis™ Blue Butterfly Bush Care
Position the Chrysalis™ blue butterfly bush in a location that receives full sunlight, or at least 6 hours of sun daily. A well-drained soil is critical to success with butterfly bushes. At planting, position the plant so it is planted very shallowly, and the soil forms a hill to meet the top of the root ball, especially in soils with a high clay content. Fertilize this plant monthly during the growing season to encourage vigorous growth and maximize blooming. Mulch over the root zone is a good idea, but make sure any mulch is pulled back away from the stems so moisture is not trapped against the plant.
Prune off spent blooms to encourage reblooming and keep the plant looking tidy. Cut the butterfly bush back to a node several inches above the soil line in spring. This species is very late to break dormancy in spring, so do not be alarmed if new growth is slow to appear.
Chrysalis™ Blue Butterfly Bush Spacing
The relatively compact Chrysalis™ blue butterfly bush grows 20 to 28 inches tall with a spread of 18 to 24 inches. Give each Chrysalis™ Blue plants at 24 - 26 inches of space.
