- Use As A Thriller In Containers
Butterfly Bush is known to be rather large for a small garden and not suitable for container growing. Chrysalis™ Pink Butterfly Bush solves both of these problems. The compact size and profusion of blooms mean that this is one shrub with a presence. Flower spikes are produced throughout the summer and only finish after the first frost. The fragrant flowers attract masses of butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. Chrysalis™ Pink Butterfly Bush has pale-pink flowers with an orange eye and works well in a container or at the front of a cottage garden bed.
The rootstock for Chrysalis™ Pink Butterfly Bush is very hardy. New growth quickly appears if the top is damaged during the winter. This Buddleia tolerates regular hard pruning without any lack of vigor. Butterfly Bush is deer, rabbit, and disease resistant. The compact, mounded growth is restrained and perfect for a container garden on a patio or deck.
Chrysalis™ Pink Butterfly Bush Care
Butterfly Bush likes to be planted in full sun in well-draining but moist soil. Chrysalis™Pink Butterfly Bush needs a soil-based potting mix when planted in a container. The soil texture can be anything from clay to sand when this shrub is in the ground. Water newly planted shrubs once a week to encourage the roots to grow further into the ground. Water container-grown shrubs when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Ensure good drainage in the pot and water until liquid comes out of the bottom. Plants growing in pots will need continuous fertilizing during the growing season. From April to August, water with a diluted liquid fertilizer for roses or tomatoes once a month. As the new growth emerges in the spring, plants growing in the ground will benefit from application of a granular, slow-release fertilizer for roses.
Deadhead spent flowers all through the summer. This will encourage the shrub to form more blooms and reduce any seed production, although the Chrysalis™ series is mostly sterile. In the early spring, cut back any winter-damaged branches. The whole shrub can be cut to within 6 inches of the soil if necessary and will regrow within one season. Ensure that container-grown plants drain well in the winter. If necessary, move the pots to a more sheltered location out of the path of prevailing winter winds and storms.
Chrysalis™ Pink Butterfly Bush Spacing
Chrysalis™ Pink has a restrained and compact growth habit. The mature height is 20-28 inches, and the width is 18-24 inches. Plant multiple Butterfly bushes approximately 18 inches apart center on center. Grow these shrubs in a container with at least a 12-inch diameter.
