Plant your butterfly bush in a location with full sun for at least six hours per day, in soil that drains well. Water regularly during the first growing season, then reduce to moderate watering once roots are established. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer each month through the active growing season helps maintain continuous flowering. While not fussy about pH, slightly alkaline to neutral soils typically work best. In colder climates, the plant may go dormant and resprout in spring, while in milder regions it can remain semi-evergreen with green stems above ground.

If growing in containers, check soil moisture more frequently to avoid over- or under-watering. Container-grown plants may require occasional rejuvenation pruning to encourage fresh shoots and ongoing flowering. In harsh winter areas, moving potted specimens to a sheltered spot can protect the roots.
