Chrysalis™ White Butterfly Bush, botanically Buddleia hybrid ‘Balchryite’, delivers crisp white flower spikes on a compact, mounded plant that reaches just 20–28 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide. Blooming from late spring through summer and often into early fall, it produces a steady supply of nectar-rich panicles above clean green foliage. We love this dwarf selection for its true white flowers that hold their color in heat. Its restrained size makes it ideal for patios and tight borders without sacrificing bloom power.
Lightly fragrant blooms draw butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds in impressive numbers. Chrysalis™ White is bred for improved downy mildew resistance and shows strong tolerance to summer rain and dry spells once established. Deer mostly pass it by. The plant blooms on new wood, which supports reliable flowering each year. Use it in mass plantings, sunny borders, pollinator gardens, or as a focal point in decorative containers; its compact habit also suits urban landscapes and smaller cottage-style gardens.
Chrysalis™ White Butterfly Bush Care
Plant in full sun for best flowering. Choose well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 5.8 to 7.0; heavy clay should be amended to improve drainage. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots, then reduce frequency as the plant becomes more drought tolerant. Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced fertilizer to encourage continuous bloom. Avoid overly rich soil, which can promote excess foliage at the expense of flowers.
In colder regions, treat this buddleia as a dieback shrub. Cut stems back to 6–12 inches in early spring before new growth begins, since it flowers on current season’s wood. Deadheading spent panicles can encourage additional bloom and keep the plant tidy. In Zone 5, apply a winter mulch layer after the ground freezes to protect the root system. Container-grown plants should be overwintered in a protected location, as roots are more exposed to cold.
Chrysalis™ White Butterfly Bush Spacing
Space plants 26–30 inches apart in borders or mass plantings to allow for mature spread and good air circulation. For a low flowering hedge effect, plant on 24-inch centers and allow the mounds to meet naturally. In containers, one plant fits well in a 14–16 inch pot with excellent drainage. Pair with sun-loving perennials or ornamental grasses like dwarf fountain grass and blanket flower, which prefer similar soil conditions and moderate watering, for a cohesive planting.
