The blue and white blooms of the Clarence Bearded Iris have to be seen to be believed. Standing tall at around 2 to 3 feet on a mass of sword-like foliage, this Iris germanica produces showy blue and white petals and a creamy beard. It blooms in late May, providing an injection of color, and will even rebloom.
A hardy perennial plant, the Clarence Bearded Iris is cold hardy in zones 3 to 9. Being drought tolerant and both deer and rabbit resistant make it a perfect specimen for warmer rural locations. This bearded iris is ideal for adding to a cottage garden or growing in an herbaceous border or cut flower patch.
Clarence Bearded Iris Care
The Clarence Bearded Iris performs best when it is grown in full sun. It prefers fertile soil, but good drainage is essential. Water frequently for the first year, after which it demonstrates drought tolerance. To encourage the best blooms, you can apply a low-nitrogen granular fertilizer in early spring.
Deadheading after the first flush of flowers will help promote blooms later in the season. After the foliage has died back in the fall, cut back hard. Divide every 3 to 5 years.
Clarence Bearded Iris Spacing
The Clarence Bearded Iris will grow to 2 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet across. A spacing of 18 to 24 inches will allow the rhizomes to spread out over time.
