Clifford Moor Campion is a lovely small perennial that is a real eye catcher. A long lasting bloom stem of delicate orchid purple flowers rise above the most interesting light and dark green variegation. This is a plant that wants to be shown off in a rock garden, in a container as part of a seasonal planting or in a large group naturalized in the woodland garden.
Clifford Moor Campion makes a good ground cover in that it stays evergreen in all but the coldest hardiness zones. When Campion is fully established it makes for one of the most drought tolerant plants you can buy. Many gardeners include it in their xeriscape plans or naturalized woodland garden schemes. Although Campion is native to woodland areas and rocky slopes of the mountains in Europe, it has been introduced to North America. Clifford Moor is not the variety that is considered an invasive species on the West Coast. Deer and disease resistant.
Clifford Moor Campion Care
Campions all require the same situation to perform at their best. Full sun to partial or bright shade, well drained and moist soil, average soil fertility and texture. Supplemental watering will be needed the first 1-2 years, although once established this plant will tolerate a very dry position. Fertilizing with a well balanced, slow release food in the early spring will keep the blooms plentiful.
Since this perennial is essentially an evergreen, the only maintenance required is to clean up winter damaged foliage and spent bloom stems in the early spring. Supplemental watering is best done with drip irrigation or soaker hoses to keep the foliage dry. Clifford Moor Campion does not like to be moved once it has established itself in a bed. Dividing is not as successful as letting the plant self seed at the end of summer. Any unwanted seedlings are easily pulled in the spring or potted up to grow on and plant in another spot.
Clifford Moor Campion Spacing
The small size of Clifford Moor Campion makes it easy to plant in just about any nook or cranny. The mature height and width is 10-12 inches. Spacing plants at 12 inches will help keep air circulation good while helping to cover an area quickly. When container growing Campion, place the plants as close as you need to to get a full display right away.
