The foliage of Cobalt-n-Gold™ Hypericum has hints of blue and is covered in dainty-yellow flowers in the spring. The foliage turns a fiery red during the fall before falling to expose the exfoliating brown bark of the stems through the winter. The compact form of Cobalt-n-Gold™ Hypericum makes it a great shrub to use repeatedly in a landscape to provide color throughout the year and a cohesive design element.
Pollinators and other wildlife love hypericum. The flowers attract pollinators like mad in the spring and early summer. The berries help feed songbirds and other small wildlife through the fall and winter. Deer do not browse hypericum because of its woody stems and prickly, tough leaves. Hypericum kalmianum is drought tolerant and naturalizes in the landscape. The upright shape is excellent as edging for a garden bed or placed in tough-to-plant areas like next to a driveway or on a sloped part of the yard.
Cobalt-n-Gold™ Hypericum Care
Hypericum thrives in full sun but also performs well in part shade. It prefers well-drained soil with an average texture and neutral pH. Regular watering will produce lush and heavy-blooming plants. Infrequent watering as the plants establish will help the roots to grow deeper in the ground and be less affected by dry and hot conditions. One inch of water, either naturally or supplementary, a week is ideal. Fertilize once a year in the spring using a granular, slow-release food. Look for a balanced ratio of NPK around 10-10-10.
Light pruning after the flowers have finished will keep this shrub in shape. Only cut deep into the woody stems if rejuvenation pruning is needed. Hypericum can become leggy over time because it blooms on new growth. The best time for rejuvenating is late in the winter, just as new growth has started. The whole plant can be cut to within 8 inches of the soil. Hypericum will quickly regrow and should be kept well watered during the summer after a hard cutback.
Cobalt-n-Gold™ Hypericum Spacing
The mature size of Hypericum Cobalt-n-Gold™ is 2-3 feet high and 4-5 feet wide. Space each shrub 4 feet apart center on center to fill in an area or create a hedge.
